Alexander Buchanan (October 11, 1845 - December 8, 1917) served as a corporal in Company C, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
Alexander Buchanan was born October 11, 1845 in Mitchell County, North Carolina to William and Millie (Greene) Buchanan. He married Adelaide Burleson (1847-1910) with whom he had two children.[1]
Civil War service[]
Buchanan enlisted as a private in Company C on January 20, 1864 in Carter County, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in October 26, 1864 at New Market, Tennessee. He was appointed corporal June 16, 1865.
He is described as 18 years old, 5' 10" tall, fair complexion, gray eyes, dark hair, and by occupation a farmer.
Buchanan is listed as present for duty throughout his term of service.[2]
Buchanan mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had never been paid, owed $27.59 to the government for clothing, and was owed a $300 bounty.
Post-war life[]
Buchanan applied for an invalid's pension on May 24, 1867. He died December 8, 1917 due to "cardio-renal dropsy" in Bakersville, North Carolina and is buried at Major Cemetery in Mitchell County.
