Personal life[]

Calvin Arnold was born January 21, 1833 in Johnson County, Tennessee to Elijah C. and Nancy Ann (Venable) Arnold. He married Sarah Phillippi (1837-1904) with whom he had six children.[1]

Civil War service[]

Arnold enlisted as a private in Company D on September 24, 1863 in Greeneville, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in October 28, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He was appointed 1st sergeant on October 1, 1863 by Colonel Miller. Arnold was commissioned 1st lieutenant on June 19, 1865, following the promotion of Alfred Donnelley to captain of the company, and mustered in at rank on June 22, 1865 at Lenoir Station, Tennessee. It was at Lenoir Station that Colonel Miller appointed him a 2nd lieutenant or was possibly acting 2nd lieutenant—he appears to have never been mustered at that rank—and was placed in command of Colonel Miller's escort on June 12, 1865; Colonel Miller was in command of the brigade at that time.[2]

He is described as 28 years old, 5' 8" tall, light complexion, black eyes, dark hair, and by occupation a farmer.

Arnold is listed as present for duty until February 17, 1864 when he was admitted to General Hospital No. 8 in Nashville, Tennessee after being transferred from the hospital at Camp Nelson, Kentucky due to iterus; he returned to duty on March 14, 1864.

Arnold mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had last been paid to to date from his commission and no receipt of any bounty paid or owed was recorded.

Post-war life[]

Following the war, Arnold served as Johnson County School Commissioner, a mail contractor, and postmaster for 26 years. The regimental history described him as “an honored and respected citizen.”[3]

Arnold died August 27, 1906 in Johnson County and is buried at Phillippi Cemetery in Mountain City, Tennessee. His wife applied for a widow's pension on July 11, 1919.
