David Ephriam South (February 14, 1842 - September 18, 1914) served as a private in Company F, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.

Personal life[]

David South was born February 14, 1842 in Grayson County, Virginia to Daniel and Sarah Ann (Lawson) South. He married Dolly Hasseltine Shaver (1846-1924) with whom he had ten children.[1]

Civil War service[]

South enlisted as a private in Company F on September 1, 1864 in Elizabethton, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in July 29, 1865 at Knoxville, Tennessee.

He is described as 23 years old, 5' 7 1/2" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, black hair, and by occupation a farmer.

South is listed as present for duty until January 20, 1865 when he was left sick with chronic diarrhea at a Knoxville hospital. He was transferred to Brownlow General Hospital on May 25, 1865. South was transferred to Asylum General Hospital on June 20, 1865 and discharged from there on July 11, 1865.

South mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had never been paid, owed $2.82 to the government for clothing, and was owed a $100 bounty.

Post-war life[]

South moved from Tennessee to Texas and Oklahoma between 1880 and 1889; he was living in Cooke County, Texas by 1889.

South applied for an invalid's pension on June 11, 1889. He died due to tuberculosis on September 18, 1914 in Burnet, Texas and is likely buried there at Odd Fellows Cemetery.[2] His wife applied for a widow's pension on October 17, 1914.
