Personal life[]

Thomas Anderson was born February 28, 1840 in White County, Tennessee to John Milton and Ann Eliza (Anderson) Anderson. He married Elizabeth Austin (1841-1872) with whom he had at least five children.[1]

Civil War service[]

Anderson first enlisted as a private in Company A, 25th Tennessee Infantry on July 25, 1861 at Tullahoma, Tennessee and was mustered in the same day for one year. In March 1863, he was arrested for an unstated reason and sentenced by court martial on April 27, 1863 to forfeit one month's pay; he was returned to duty on May 11, 1863. Anderson deserted on July 4, 1863.

Changing his allegiance, Anderson enlisted as a private in Company G, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry on August 13, 1864 in Knoxville, Tennessee for a period of three years. He was never mustered into the service and deserted on September 27, 1864 at Bean Station, Tennessee; Anderson never returned to the regiment.

He is described as 24 years old, 5' 10" tall, fair complexion, gray eyes, dark hair, and by occupation a farmer.

When the regiment mustered out on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville, it was noted that he had never been paid, had received no bounty, and was not furnished with a discharge.

Post-war life[]

Anderson died March 3, 1873 in White County and is buried there at Austin-Anderson Cemetery.
