Henry W. Tester (August 30, 1840 - April 2, 1917) served as a corporal in Company C, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.

Personal life[]

Henry Tester was born August 30, 1840 in Carter County, Tennessee to Nathaniel and Nancy (McElyea) Tester. He married Mary Elizabeth Dunn (1852-1920) with whom he had three children.[1]

Civil War service[]

Tester enlisted as a private in Company C on September 24, 1863 in Carter County, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in October 28, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He was appointed corporal on June 10, 1864.

He is described as 22 years old, 5' 10" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by occupation a farmer.

Tester is listed as present for duty throughout his term of service for which muster roll records have survived.

Tester mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had last been paid to August 31, 1864, owed $30.43 to the government for clothing, had been paid a $25 bounty, and was owed a $75 bounty.

Post-war life[]

Tester applied for an invalid's pension on August 4, 1882. He died on April 2, 1917 in Johnson County, Tennessee; the location of his grave has not been found. His wife applied for a widow's pension on April 23, 1917. John M. Tester applied for a "helpless child" pension on June 7, 1921.
