Jeremiah Oaks (abt 1818 - November 28, 1864) served as a private in Company C, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
Jeremiah Oaks was born about 1818 in Mitchell County, North Carolina to David and Socca (Davis) Oaks in Watauga County, North Carolina. He married Martha Franklin (1837-1903) with whom he had eight children.
Civil War service[]
Oaks enlisted as a private in Company C on January 20, 1864 in New Market, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in October 26, 1864 at New Market. His brother Nehemiah Oaks also served in Company C.
He is described as "40 years old", 5' 10" tall, dark complexion, gray eyes, dark hair, and by occupation a farmer. He apparently lied about his age to join the Army.[1]
Oaks died November 28, 1864 in a hospital at Knoxville, Tennessee. The company records for his service have not been found, so it is uncertain if he had any service in the field or when he was admitted to the hospital. Oaks is buried in Knoxville National Cemetery in Knoxville.[2] His wife applied for a widow's pension on August 10, 1865.
When the regiment mustered out on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville, it was noted that he had never been paid, nor received any bounty.
