John Bailey (October 4, 1845 - January 31, 1925) served as a private in Company F, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
John Bailey was born to John and Mary (Slemp) Bailey in Johnson County, Tennessee. He married Louzena M. Slemp (1854 - 1941) on August 11, 1873, with whom he had least eight children.
Civil War service[]
Bailey[1] enlisted in Company F on September 22, 1863 in Washington County, Tennessee for a period of three years. He mustered in November 8, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. Bailey is described as 6', fair complexion, blue eyes, and black hair. At the time of enlistment his occupation was "farmer".
Bailey deserted September 25, 1864 at Carter's Depot, Tennessee.[2] He returned to the regiment April 10, 1865 in compliance with President Lincoln's proclamation and was restored to duty. He is otherwise listed as present for duty throughout his entire term of service.
Bailey mustered out September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had been paid through June 30, 1864 and owed $31.92 for clothing. He had received a bounty of $25 for his service.
Later life[]
Bailey applied for an invalid's pension December 29, 1879. His wife Louzena applied for a widow's pension on March 17, 1925. Bailey died January 31, 1925 in Carter County and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Elk Mills, Tennessee.
