John R. Holly (January 7, 1843 - June 10, 1923) served as a corporal in Company C, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.

Personal life

John Holly was born January 7, 1843 in Carter County, Tennessee to James and Mary (Berry) Holly. He married Mary M. Wills (1855-1942); they had no children.[1]

Civil War service

Holly enlisted as a private in Company C on September 24, 1863 in Carter County, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in October 28, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He was appointed corporal on November 1, 1864.

No descriptive records for him have been found in the regimental papers.

He is listed as present for duty throughout his term of service for which muster roll records have survived.

Holly mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had last been paid to August 31, 1864, owed $7.33 to the government for clothing, had been paid a $25 bounty, and was owed a $75 bounty.

Post-war life

Holly applied for an invalid's pension on September 6, 1879. He died June 10, 1923 in Elizabethton, Tennessee and is buried at Green Hill Cemetery there. His wife applied for a widow's pension on June 27, 1923.
