John William Leonard (September 10, 1835 - April 20, 1864) served as a private in Company C, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.

Personal life[]

John Leonard was born September 10, 1835 in Carter County, Tennessee to Obediah and Esther (Lacy) Leonard. He was unmarried.

Civil War service[]

Leonard enlisted as a private in Company C on September 24, 1863 in Carter County for a period of three years and mustered in October 28, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee.

He is described as 28 years old, 5' 6" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by occupation a farmer.

Leonard is listed as present for duty until April 15, 1864 when he was left at Hospital No. 19 in Nashville where and died on April 20, 1864 due to consumption.[1] His personal effects consisted of one hat, one uniform jacket, one pair boots, a watch, and $9 currency. Leonard is buried at Nashville National Cemetery in Madison, Tennessee.

When the regiment mustered out on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville it was noted that he had last been paid to December 31, 1863 and had been paid a $25 bounty.

His mother applied for a dependent's pension on June 18, 1879; she died in 1885 and his father applied for a pension on May 25, 1885.

  1. Leonard may have been ill and not present for duty before April 15, 1864. The muster rolls and descriptive rolls of Company C were captured presumed destroyed.
