John H. Lewis (abt 1849 - February 10, 1865) served as a private in Company A, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
John Lewis was born about 1849 in Carter County, Tennessee to David John and Emeline (Pierce) Lewis. He was unmarried.
Civil War service[]
Lewis enlisted as a private in Company L on September 22, 1863 in Carter County, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in February 25, 1863 at Nashville, Tennessee. He was transferred to Company A on February 24, 1864 by order of Colonel Miller. Lewis served on unspecified detached service beginning January 10, 1865.
He is described as 18 years old, 5' 10" tall, fair complexion, black eyes, light hair, and by occupation a farmer. Lewis lied about his age and was probably 14 years old, making him one of the youngest soldiers in the regiment.[1]
Lewis is listed as present for duty until May 1864 at an unrecorded location and duration. He was then admitted to Asylum General Hospital at Knoxville on August 17, 1864; when he returned to the regiment was not recorded. He was again admitted to Asylum General Hospital on February 25, 1865. He died there on April 6, 1865 due to measles and is buried at Knoxville National Cemetery. Lewis had no personal effects or money at the time of his death.
When the regiment mustered on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville, it was noted that he had last been paid to August 31, 1864, had been paid a $25 bounty, and was owed a $75 bounty.
His father, David J. Lewis, also served in Company A.
