John R. Morefield (born abt 1823) served as a corporal in Company D, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Morefield was born about 1823 in Johnson County, Tennessee
Morefield enlisted as a private in Captain Patterson's Company (Company K), 5th Tennessee Infantry on January 9, 1848 in Jonesborough, Tennessee and was mustered in on April 14, 1848. He is listed as present throughout his service and mustered out with the regiment on July 20, 1848 at Memphis, Tennessee. He had last been paid to April 30, 1848 and owed $21 to the government for clothing in kind or money advanced.
Morefield enlisted as a private in Company G on September 22, 1863 in Greeneville, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in October 28, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He was transferred to Company D that same day by order of Colonel Miller. Morefield was appointed corporal on June 25, 1865.
He is described as 40 years old, 5' 5" tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, and by occupation a farmer.
Morefield is listed as present for duty throughout his term of service for which muster roll records have survived.
Morefield mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had last been paid to August 31, 1864, owed $72.15 to the government for clothing, had been paid a $25 bounty, and was owed a $75 bounty.
When Morefield died, where he died, and where he is buried has not been found.
