Nance enlisted as a private in Company K on September 22, 1863 in Louisville, Kentucky for a period of three years and was never mustered in.

He is described as 25 years old, 5' 8" tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, and by occupation a farmer.

Nance was reported as captured and paroled at Sevierville, Tennessee by Colonel William Thomas' "Legion of Indians" on November 15, 1863. He never returned to the regiment and is listed as a deserter on January 30, 1864. Nance was dishonorably discharged.
