John H. Rainbolt (November 6, 1825 - June 28, 1864) served as a sergeant in Company A, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.

Personal life[]

John Rainbolt was born November 6, 1825 in Johnson County, Tennessee to Elisha and Elizabeth (Dugger) Rainbolt. He married Matilda Venable (1826-1909) with whom he had nine children.[1] Rainbolt was appointed postmaster of Cobbs Creek, Tennessee on September 2, 1856.[2]

Civil War service[]

Rainbolt enlisted as a private in Company A on September 22, 1863 in Carter County, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in May 31, 1864 at Gallatin, Tennessee. He was promoted to sergeant May 1, 1864.

He is described as 38 years old, 5' 10" tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, and by occupation a shoemaker.

Rainbolt is listed as present for duty until he was left sick at U.S. General Hospital in Gallatin on an unrecorded date, where he died on June 28, 1864 due to measles. No list of personal effects has been found. The location of Rainbolt's grave has not been identified.

When the regiment mustered out on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville, it was noted that had been paid a $25 bounty and was owed a $75 bounty.

His wife applied for a widow's pension on December 1, 1865.
