John Marion Roland (September 21, 1837 - July 13, 1898) served as a blacksmith in Company E, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
John Roland was born September 21, 1837 in Ashe County, North Carolina to Robert and Elizabeth (Ford) Roland. He married Mary Louise Catharine Mays (1848-1931) with whom he had eleven children.[1]
Civil War service[]
Roland enlisted as a private in Company E on September 24, 1863 in Greene County, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in January 3, 1864 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky. He was appointed company teamster on January 7, 1864 and later appointed company blacksmith on October 17, 1864 by order of Lieutenant Colonel Ingerton.
He is described as 26 years old, 5' 10 1/4" tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, and by occupation a farmer.
Roland is listed as present for duty throughout his term of service for which muster roll records have survived.
Roland mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had last been paid to August 31, 1864, owed $4.77 to the government for clothing, had been paid a $25 bounty, and was owed a $75 bounty.
Post-war life[]
Roland applied for an invalid's pension on September 9, 1889. He died July 13, 1898 in Dungannon, Virginia and is buried at Addington Eddigton Cemetery in Nickelsville, Virginia. His wife applied for a widow's pension on August 16, 1898.
