Landon McElyea

Landon Henry McElyea (June 7, 1842 - December 9, 1919) served as a private in Company F, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.

Personal life

Landon McElyea was born June 7, 1842 in Johnson County, Tennessee to Larkin Morris and Mary (Harris) McElyea. He married Alzenia Tester (1845-1914) with whom he had seven children.

Civil War service

McElyea enlisted in Company K on September 22, 1863 in Washington County, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in November 8, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He was transferred to Company F before December 1863.

He is described as 21 years old, 5' 10" tall, fair complexion, black eyes, dark hair, and by occupation a farmer.

McElyea is listed as present for duty until March 28, 1864 when he was left sick at General Hospital Number 1 in Nashville, Tennessee. When McElyea returned to the regiment is not found in his records. He is otherwise listed as present for duty throughout his remainder of his term of service.

McElyea mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had last been paid to August 31, 1864, owed $14.19 to the government for clothing, had been paid a $25 bounty, and was owed a $75 bounty.

Post-war life

McElyea applied for an invalid's pension on June 28, 1880. He died December 9, 1919 in Butler, Tennessee and is buried at Dry Hill Cemetery in Johnson County.
