Landon Carter Wilson (abt 1808 - bef 1896) served as a corporal in Company C, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
Landon Wilson was born about 1808 in Carter County, Tennessee to John and Ruth (Lloyd) Wilson. He married Martha Caroline Wilcoxson (1826-aft 1880) with whom he had at least nine children.[1]
Civil War service[]
Wilson enlisted as a private in Company C on September 24, 1863 in Carter County, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in October 28, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He was appointed corporal on February 1, 1865.
He is described as 45 years old, 5' 10" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and by occupation a carpenter. He obviously lied about his age at enlistment, making him one of the oldest men in the regiment.
Wilson is listed as present for duty until March 3, 1865 when he was left sick in Knoxville at Asylum General Hospital; he again lied about his age, stating 55 when admitted to the hospital. On orders from the War Department dated May 3, 1865, Wilson was discharged on May 24, 1865 due to disability.
When the regiment mustered out on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville, it was noted that he had last been paid to August 31, 1864, owed $38.37 to the government for clothing in kind or money advanced, had been paid a $25 bounty.
Post-war life[]
Wilson died about 1896 and is buried at Saint Paul Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Morristown, Tennessee. No other information about his life after the war has been found.
