Miles Anderson Goforth (September 15, 1840 - August 8, 1898) served as a private in Company L, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
Miles Goforth was born September 15, 1840 in Henderson County, North Carolina to Miles Anderson and Elizabeth (Patillo) Goforth. He married Nancy Elizabeth Cook (1841-1889) with whom he had at least seven children.
Civil War service[]
Goforth enlisted in Company L on March 4, 1864 in Knoxville, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in April 11, 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee.
He is listed as present for duty until August 19, 1864 when he deserted at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He did not return to the regiment and was not given a discharge.
When the regiment mustered out on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville, it was recorded that Goforth owed $10.43 to the government for clothing and had received a $25 bounty.
Post-war life[]
Goforth moved frequently after the war. He moved to Georgia by 1867 where he married, to Oklahoma by 1875, to Kansas by 1877, and to Oregon by 1890.[1]
Goforth died August 8, 1898 in Elgin, Oregon and is buried at Highland Cemetery in Union County, Oregon.
