Peter Phipps (December 25, 1845 - January 20, 1924) served as a private in Company M, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.

Personal life

Peter Phipps was born December 25, 1845 in Lee County, Virginia to Abraham and Alice (Yeary) Phipps. He married Elizabeth Blevins (1843-1919) with whom he had at least eight children.

Civil War service

Phipps enlisted as a private in Company M on August 1, 1864 in Bulls Gap, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in October 26, 1864 at New Market, Tennessee.

He is described as 18 years old, 5' 6" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, fair hair, and by occupation a farmer.

Phipps is listed as present for duty throughout his term of service. In May and June 1865 he is listed as present on detached service.

Phipps mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had been never been paid, was owed $11.53 from the government for clothing, and was owed a $100 bounty.

Post-war life

He applied for an invalid's pension on April 14, 1883. Between 1904 and 1914, he was admitted four times to the Mountain Branch of the National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Johnson County, Tennessee; his last admission in 1914 lasted six years.

Phipps died January 20, 1924 in Johnson County, Tennessee and is buried at Proffitt Cemetery in Johnson County.
