Starling Green

Starling Patterson Green (January 2, 1840 - July 22, 1918) served as a private in Company C, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.

Personal life

Starling Green was born January 2, 1840[1] in Mitchell County, North Carolina to Thomas and Lucinda (Buchanan) Green.[2] He first married Phoebe McKinney (1849-1866) with whom he had at least two children. He married second Mary Adelaide Burleson (1855-1928) with whom he had at least five children.

Civil War service

Green enlisted as a private in Company C on September 24, 1863 in Carter County, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in November 2, 1863 at Knoxville, Tennessee. He was appointed corporal October 28, 1863.

He is described as 22 years old, 5' 10" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, black hair, and by occupation a farmer.

Green is listed as present for duty until October 8, 1864 when he deserted near Jonesborough, Tennessee. He returned to the regiment on or about March 9, 1865 and was restored to duty by Colonel Miller with all pay and allowances while absent, but reduced in rank to private. He was present for duty for the remainder of his term of service.

Green mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had been paid to June 30, 1864, owed $59.66 to the government for his clothing, and had received a bounty of $25.

Post-war life

He applied for an invalid's pension on July 9, 1881. His wife Mary applied for a widow's pension on August 14, 1918.

Green died July 22, 1918 in Mitchell County, North Carolina and is buried at Cane Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Hawk, North Carolina.

Notes

  1. An alternate birth date from his death certificate is January 18, 1839.
  2. His military records and headstone use the spelling of "Green" for his surname. U.S. Census records and other records vary between "Green" and "Greene". His death certificate uses "Green" whereas all of his adult male children used "Greene"; his second wife's headstone uses "Green".
