Stephen Street (August 12, 1825 - October 15, 1885) served as a sergeant in Company B, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
Stephen Street was born August 12, 1825 in Burke County, North Carolina to William Clingman and Rebecca (Pettit) Street. He married Nancy Street (1835-1904) with whom he had at least twelve children.
Civil War service[]
Street enlisted as a private in Company B on September 23, 1863 in Knoxville, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in as a sergeant on February 24, 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee.
He is listed as present for duty throughout his term of service, except for recruiting duty beginning August 1, 1864. No record was found when his service on recruiting duty ended.
On or about October 11, 1864, Street requested a discharge from the regiment and have an official examination administered to be a 2nd lieutenant in Company E, 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry.[1] The request was approved and he mustered out of the 13th Tennessee Cavalry on December 2, 1864; he had already been paid a $25 bounty.
Post-war life[]
Street served as sheriff of Mitchell County, North Carolina from 1865 to 1870; he then served as auditor for the county. Street was also a farmer, stonecutter, and pastor of Spring Creek Baptist Church.
He died October 15, 1885 in Mitchell County, North Carolina and is buried at Street Cemetery in Mitchell County. His wife applied for a widow's pension on March 23, 1886.

- ↑ Street was promoted to captain on March 28, 1865. This regiment became well known for its unconventional tactics in responding to bushwhackers in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina and was in turn labeled bushwhackers by Confederate authorities and rebel sympathizers.
