Tapley McClennan Ward (January 13, 1834 - January 21, 1865) served as a corporal in Company F, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
Tapley Ward was born January 13, 1834 in Johnson County, Tennessee to John and Nancy (Wilson) Ward. He married Keren Brown (1831-1925), with whom he had at least six children.
Civil War service[]
Ward enlisted as a private in Company F on September 22, 1863 in Carter County, Tennessee for a period of three years. He mustered in November 8, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He was appointed corporal on November 8, 1863 by Colonel Miller.
At enlistment he is described as 29 years old, 5' 8 1/2" tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, and by occupation a farmer.
Ward was present for duty until left sick in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 16, 1864. He was admitted to Number 1 General Hospital on June 2, 1864 and returned to duty on November 21, 1864.
Ward was admitted to the Asylum General Hospital at Knoxville on November 28, 1864 where he died on January 21, 1865 due to phthisis pulmonalis [tuberculosis]. His personal effects consisted of two pairs cotton drawers, two flannel shirts, one pair boots, one silver watch, and 10 cents.
When the regiment mustered out on September 5, 1865 in Knoxville it is noted that he was last paid to June 30, 1864, had been paid a $25 bounty, and was owed a bounty of $75.
Ward is buried at Knoxville National Cemetery. His wife applied for a widow's pension on September 19, 1865.
