Thomas Brown (b. abt August 1843 - November 12, 1908) served as an under cook in Company L, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry. He is one of twenty-three black men known to have served with the regiment, all of whom served as company cooks.

Brown was born in Gaston County, North Carolina.
Civil War service[]
Thomas Brown enlisted in Company L on October 2, 1864 in Knoxville, Tennessee for a period of three years. He mustered in on October 6, 1864.
At enlistment he was 21 years and two months old, 5' 8" tall, dark complexion, black eyes, dark hair, and a farmer.
According to the muster rolls he was present every month throughout his service. He mustered out with the regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. Records state that he had not been paid since enlistment and was owed $57.05 from the government for his clothing.
Later life[]
His wife Mary E. Brown applied for a pension on November 19, 1908.
