Tyre B. Gillespie (born abt. 1844) served as a corporal in Company G, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
Tyre Gillespie was born about 1844 in Surry County, North Carolina to Levi and Mary (Bryant) Gillespie.[1] Both of his parents died within months of each other in 1854; he and his siblings were raised thereafter by their maternal aunt and uncle.[2]
Civil War service[]
Gillespie enlisted as a private in Company G on September 24, 1863 in Carter County, Tennessee for a period of three years and mustered in October 28, 1863 at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He was promoted to 2nd corporal on October 20, 1863 by order of Colonel Miller.
He is described as 19 years old, 5' 10" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by occupation a farmer.
Gillespie is listed as present for duty until February 17, 1864 when he admitted to U.S. Hospital No. 8 at Nashville, Tennessee. He was transferred to Madison General Hospital at Madison, Indiana on May 3, 1864.
Gillespie was discharged due to disability on June 15, 1864 at Madison. The examining surgeon noted on his discharge: "Phthisis pulmonalis--has obstinate cough, abundant expectoration, hectic night sweats, colliquative diarrhea, and is extremely emaciated. Disease probably not contracted in service. Diagnosis of disability, total."
No record of his accounts have been found for when the regiment mustered out on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville.
Post-war life[]
Gillespie applied for an invalid's pension on July 2, 1864. No further record of him is found afterward; it is very likely that he died soon after the pension application was filed. His grave has not been located.
