William B. Neely (January 10, 1831 - October 12, 1873) served as a private in Company E, 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry.
Personal life[]
William Neely was born January 10, 1831 in Virginia. He married Sarah Jane Gentry (1830-1914) with whom he had at least four children.
Civil War service[]
Neely enlisted as a private in Company E on September 24, 1863 in Greeneville, Tennessee for a period of three years. He mustered in November 8, 1863 in Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He was appointed bugler October 28, 1863.
He is listed as present for duty until he deserted September 5, 1864 at Bull's Gap, Tennessee. Neely returned to the regiment on February 22, 1865 and was restored to duty at the rank of private with the charge of desertion removed by President Lincoln's proclamation.
Neely mustered out with regiment on September 5, 1865 at Knoxville. He had last been paid to June 30, 1864, owed $27.92 to the government for clothing, and had received a bounty of $25.[1]
Post-war life[]
Neely died October 12, 1873 in Johnson County, Tennessee and is buried at Acre Field Cemetery in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee. His wife applied for a widow's pension on June 13, 1888.
